We’re just going to go ahead and say it: freesias are super charming! They have a one-of-a-kind sweet and powerful fragrance and colorful, bell-shaped, exotic blooms. There’s nothing to dislike. Well…except the fact that they’re notoriously difficult to cultivate outside of their natural South African environment. In fact, they didn’t see widespread cultivation until the latter part of the 19th century.
But this fragile beauty is unique for many reasons. Firstly, it has one of the strongest scents in the world and is commonly used in designer perfumes, bath oils, soaps, and lotions. Secondly, freesias are “zygomorphic,” which is a hoity-toity way of saying the flowers blossom only along one side of the stem. Finally, freesias are bright and exceptionally pleasing to the eyes, ranging from rich yellows and oranges to exotic reds, purples, and pinks.
Although they are exceptionally gorgeous, freesia cut flower care is not as simple as most other flowers. They are extremely delicate in nature. For that reason, if you’re lucky enough to receive a Bouq of fresh cut freesias, it’s vital to give them the proper care and attention—or they’ll be going to flower heaven a lot sooner than you wanted them to.
Before we get into how to care for freesias indoors, we’ll give you the lowdown on freesia symbolism and some fun freesia facts. Trust us, knowing a little more about them will make that Bouq even more dazzling!
Freesia Symbolism
In Victorian England, it was considered uncouth to talk about feelings and emotions. As a result of this, many people passed coded messages to each other using flowers. During that time, messages accompanied by a freesia were the ultimate sign of trust between two confidential parties. Sounds a lot like the days of middle school note passing, right?
In modern times, though, freesias have generally represented friendship, thoughtfulness, grace under pressure, and innocence. Freesias also carry specific meanings depending on the color:
- White freesias symbolize purity.
- Red freesias represent a fiery passion.
- Multicolored freesia Bouqs represent friendship and warm relationships.
- Pink freesias signify motherly love.
- Yellow freesias are a symbol of joy, renewal, and positive feelings.
How to Care for Freesia Indoors
Like we already mentioned, freesia cut flower care is more difficult than many other flowers but it doesn’t have to be a stress-inducing ordeal. All you need to do is take a few minutes out of your day and follow our simple steps, and you’ll have some sweet-smelling, head-turning freesias gracing your home for 1-2 weeks.
Find a Vase and Cut the Stems
First things first, find a super clean vase or wash one out with warm water and soap—nothing spells the premature end of cut flowers quite like harmful bacteria. Next, you’ll want to get those pretty little flowers ready for their new home.
- Hold each stem next to the vase to determine how much needs trimmed.
- Remove any blooms or foliage that will fall below the waterline; this also prevents bacteria growth.
- Use a sharp knife or garden shears to cut the stems—1-2 inches usually is best.
- Fill your vase with cool water and drop the included flower food inside.
For the best results, make sure to trim the stems at a 45-degree angle while holding them underwater. This will prevent the stalks from sitting flat in your vase and allows your flowers to drink all that refreshing water more easily. Next, toss those beauties in and arrange as desired!
Find Your Freesias a Suitable Environment
So now you got a vase full of dazzling, brightly colored freesias. Great! But don’t rest on your laurels just yet. If you want your brand spanking new flowers to live a long and full life and retain their attractive appearance, you’ll need to find them a healthy living space.
Most importantly, this means making absolutely sure to keep your freesias away from any fruits or vegetables. Yes, fruits and veggies are healthy for you, but the same can’t be said of your flowers. Exposure to the ethylene gas from the fruits and veggies is particularly harmful to freesias and can cause the petals to fade and shatter, which is probably not the look you or your freesias are going for.
Also, keep your freesias away from direct sunlight or any hot or cold drafts. A cool temperature is the best way to extend their lifespan.
Recondition Every Two Days
Found them a home? Perfecto! But don’t stop there. Those freshly cut cuties are divas and require regular love, attention, and affection.
Basically, this means you should re-cut the stems, change the water, and add more flower nourishment every two days. And when the flower food that came with your Bouq runs out, don’t worry. You can make some homemade flower grub that your freesia will happily lap up.
