All About Jasmine Plants: What to Know

Jasmine Plant Facts

The word “jasmine” might ring a bell to a lot of people. You’ve probably seen jasmine-flavored teas, jasmine-scented candles, or essential oils for cosmetics. The jasmine plant is known more for its fragrant blooms, but there’s so much more to them than just their sweet smell!

We want to shine the spotlight on jasmine plants and why we find them so nifty and unique. Without further ado, here are some cool facts about these greens and tips on how to take care of them.

Jasmine Facts

  1. Jasmine is a type of flowering plant that actually belongs to the olive family. Surprised, right? It develops bell-shaped blooms with white, waxy petals.
  2. Most species originate from South and Southeast Asia, but there are some that are native to Africa as well.
  3. These greens grow to be 10 to 15 feet tall, usually in the form of a shrub and sometimes in the form of an evergreen vine. The latter can reach around 25 feet in height.
  4. Jasmine flower buds are actually more fragrant than the petals themselves! The buds begin flowering during spring or summer.
  5. A jasmine plant’s smell is stronger at night because the drop in temperature causes the flowers to open up more. This not only helps emit a more noticeable fragrance, but it also reveals the star-like petals of the blooms.
  6. Butterflies and bees are huge fans of jasmine; they enjoy pollinating the plant, and after the completed pollination process, the plant begins to bear blackberries – the fruit of jasmine!
  7. In India, jasmine is referred to as “Queen of the Night” due to its strong scent after sunset.
  8. In most parts of the world, jasmine is very symbolic. In the Philippines, jasmine is often featured in weddings and religious ceremonies. In Thailand, the flower represents motherhood, love, and respect. This precious bloom is also the national flower of Pakistan!
  9. Jasmine tea is considered quite beneficial to one’s health. It contains high levels of antioxidants called catechins. Drinking jasmine-infused tea can reduce the risk of cancer and lower one’s heart rate, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
  10. The jasmine plant comes from warm, tropical climates – so they are actually considered tropical plants!

How to Care for Jasmine Plants

Jasmine plants can thrive for years and years with just the right amount of attention. Most people like to grow them indoors now, housing them in nice pots and planters. While we’re all about this growing love for houseplants, raising indoor plants can get a bit tricky but we’re here to make sure your jasmine plant can continue to grace your living space for a long time.

  • With lighting, jasmines need full sunlight during spring and summer since this is their bloom season; during winter on the other hand, direct light isn’t necessary, but they do need enough to survive.
  • Their soil should be moist and well-drained at all times, but be careful of overwatering! The trick is to pour water into your pot slowly to prevent slip-ups and potential root-rotting.
  • Also, because you’ll be dealing with tropical plants, the surrounding temperatures should be anywhere between 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Jasmine plants can still survive in cooler rooms, but be sure that temperatures don’t fall under 41 degrees!
  • Don’t forget to prune regularly as well – this will help maintain the plant’s overall health and shine.
