The Simmering Method

Simmering is the quickest recipe to make liquid rose gold (That joke was too good to resist.). Follow these directions for the easiest method to learn how to make your own homemade DIY rose water. You only need a few items to get started:

Materials

    • Rose Petals
    • Distilled Water
    • Large Pot with Lid
    • Strainer
    • Measuring Cups
    • Sanitized Spray Bottle

Optional:

  • Filtered Water (if Distilled Water is unavailable)
  • Muslin or Cheesecloth

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep the roses

Remove ½ to 1 cup’s worth of fresh petals from stems. (Note: 1 cup of fresh petals is
equal to 2 or 3 flowers.) Clean the petals with tap water. Prep time: a few minutes.

2. Add petals and distilled water to the pot.

Pour just enough distilled water to cover the rose petals (approx. 1 ½ cups). Make sure it’s enough, but not too much. Too much and it will distill the rose water.

3. Simmer the water for 15-30 minutes.

Once the pot is on the stove, turn the burner to medium heat. Once it is simmering, cover with the lid, and reduce the heat to a lower setting. You just want enough heat to keep it at a simmer. To know when it’s done, the petals should be a paler color. At this point, turn off the heat, take off the lid, and let cool completely.

4. Strain the liquid.

Use a strainer to separate the petals and your homemade rose water. Use muslin or cheesecloth when straining to have a more concentrated color. When done, dispose of the petals.

5. Bottle up the rose water.

Add the liquid to your spray bottle, and spritz away! It can be kept in the refrigerator for up to one month, and at room temperature for up to one week.
