Huntington Library Botanical Gardens

With a library, art museum, and botanical garden in one place, The Huntington provides something for everyone. With over 130 acres of gardens, you can spend days wandering through the property without seeing all it has to offer.

Chinese Garden

Known as one of the most magnificent classic Chinese gardens outside of China, this 15-acre garden contains plants including lotus, bamboo, peach trees, and pine trees.

Japanese and Bonsai Garden

With manicured plants and exquisite garden designs, it’s no wonder Japan is one of the top flower destinations around the world. Even if you can’t visit Japan, this garden will introduce you to the relaxing nature of Japanese gardens. Along with stunning wisteria, Japanese maples, and pines, you can also enjoy the fine architecture of the ceremonial teahouse and the colorful koi pond.

The bonsai garden is one of the largest collections in the United States, and its ever-changing nature means you’ll always find something new. California Garden

This 6.5-acre garden showcases both California native plants as well as non-native options that can thrive in Los Angeles’ climate. The garden also provides a look at the area’s agricultural history with a row of elegant olive trees.

Children’s Garden

If you’re looking for an area to enjoy with your little ones, this garden will be right up your alley. With plant-shaped topiaries, a water area to splash in, and plant-covered tunnels, kids of all ages will have a blast exploring the garden.

Australian Garden (similar climate to Los Angeles)

What began with a thousand eucalyptus trees has now morphed into a showcase of Australian plants. A stroll through this garden will introduce you to unfamiliar yet beautiful plants including kangaroo paws, wax flowers, and blue hibiscus.

Rose Garden

While many think of winter as a drab period, this garden proves otherwise. Visit in January or February and you’ll be delighted by the blooms of over 1,200 camellia varieties, including lots of red, pink, and white flowers.

Desert Garden

With over 500 species of cacti, succulents, and other desert plants, this 10-acre garden illustrates the beautiful diversity present in desert environments. You’ll be able to view multi-story agave plants, numerous aloe species, and many bright cacti flowers.

Herb Garden

You know plants are beautiful, but did you know just how useful they are? This garden contains culinary and medicinal herbs as well as plants that can be used for dyes, insect repellents, perfumes, and more.

Subtropical Garden

This garden displays a diverse variety of plants that thrive in areas just outside the tropics. Gardeners are constantly monitoring plants they do well and making changes to find plants that are the best suited to the area.

Descanso Gardens

Located just 20 minutes from Downtown LA, Descanso Gardens is a great place to view both native California plants as well as curated gardens. While there are all sorts of exhibits, the camellia garden is a showstopper. Not only is it one of the biggest collections of camellias in the Western hemisphere, but it’s won the title of International Camellia Garden of Excellence.

Along with camellias, you can enjoy a 5-acre rose garden, live oak forest, and an 8-acre garden showcasing California’s native plants.

While the gardens are stunning to walk through, you can also hop aboard the Enchanted Railroad for a ride through a portion of the property. And since it’s open every day but Christmas, you have no reason not to visit!

Exposition Park Rose Garden

Located in South Los Angeles, this garden combines a romantic rose garden, stunning ocean view, and impressive mansion. Needless to say, it’s one of the top wedding destinations in the area! That said, visitors can tour the garden without an invitation.

South Coast Botanical Garden

Address: 26300 Crenshaw Blvd, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274

Located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula just south of LA, the South Coast Botanical Garden covers 87 acres and contains over 2,500 species of plants. Some highlights include a fuchsia garden with lots of different species and cultivars, a greenhouse filled with tropical and carnivorous plants, and a grove of Moreton Bay fig trees.

Although the garden is open most days of the year, you’ll need to purchase a ticket in advance.

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is an excellent spot to catch the diversity of California’s native plants. With over 1,000 species of natives as well as conservation education, you may find yourself walking away with the desire to plant some California native plants in your own garden.

Los Angeles County Arboretum

With 127 acres of gardens and historic buildings, this arboretum has more than enough to keep you busy for an afternoon. Visitors can enjoy a manicured rose garden, California native celebration garden, and the peafowl that wander the property.

Gardens at The Getty Center

Los Angeles Area Flower Fields

Along with manicured gardens, the LA area also has its fair share of flower fields. While blooms vary throughout the year, a visit to one of the following locations during the spring and summer can provide a jaw-dropping display of blooms.

Point Mugu State Park

Located along the coast, Point Mugu State Park is beautiful to visit any time of the year. However, a springtime visit will introduce you to fields covered in colorful wildflowers like California poppies, coreopsis, and purple phacelia. Some trails to check out include the Ray Miller Backbone Trail and the Big Sycamore Canyon Trail.

The park also offers beaches and camping, so it’s a wonderful destination for a weekend getaway.

Malibu Creek State Park

Although the park’s landscape was altered by a 2018 wildfire, the area still showcases stunning natural displays. The Backbone Trail, Cistern Trail, and Phantom Trail are filled with spring wildflowers including globe lilies, various species of phacelia, fire poppies, and more!

Since the blooms rotate throughout the year, it’s worth visiting more than once, even if you choose to hike the same trail.

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

If you’re looking to be surrounded by fiery fields of California poppies, this is the place for you! With the right weather, this area explodes with a superbloom of the California state flower. Along with poppies, you can find lupine, red maids, forget-me-nots, and other types of flowers. For the best wildflower show, plan to visit in March or April.

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park: Big Bend

Located in one of the area’s few remaining coastal canyons, the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park contains wooded lowlands and high, rocky cliffs. The Big Bend trail is one of the best places to view wildflowers such as various sages and cacti blooms.

Walker Canyon Lake Elsinore

Address: Walker Canyon, Lake Elsinore, CA 92530

This area is another great place to view hillsides covered with California poppies. At peak bloom the area can get quite crowded, so make sure to stay on the trails and respect the wildflowers! But feel free to take photographs – the stunning display will make for great Zoom backgrounds of flowers.
