Four Handy Flower Hacks to Keep In Your Pocket

Flower Hacks

Here at The Bouqs Co., we’re big believers in taking the DIY route whenever possible—and that most definitely includes making use of all the flower hacks we’ve developed over the years.

And now we feel that it’s high time we fill you all in on some of the awesome flower tips and tricks we’ve got up our sleeve. You’re our beloved readers, after all, and if fresh cut flowers mean as much to you as they do to us, you deserve the best advice we have to offer when it comes to flower care.

So what are we waiting for? Let’s dive right in!

Cut Flower Stems at 45-degree Angle While Holding Under Water

This flower tip is an absolute must when it comes to proper flower care.

Why? Well, for one, a 45-degree angle increases the surface area of the stems, maximizing the amount of water the flowers can then absorb. Two, since you cut your flowers at a diagonal angle, the stems won’t be able to lay flat at the bottom of the vase, in turn blocking water absorption. And three, holding the stems under water while cutting makes sure that no air bubbles get in the way of your flowers and their intense water drinking habit.

All in all, it means your flowers will never have to go thirsty. And, trust us, that’s 100% a good thing. But we don’t have to tell you that! You already know that flowers love, love, love some good ol’ H2O.

So next time you receive a beautiful Bouq, give those flowers a nice 1-2 inch trim using the strategy above. You’ll definitely notice a difference in their health, attractiveness, and longevity!

Find Quirky Alternatives to Use as a Vase

Most people hear “vase” and think, “Oh yeah, that thing you put flowers in”. But why limit yourself to traditional glass flower vases when there are so many other creative options at hand? I mean, at the end of the day, a vase is just an open container like dozens of other household items.

Let us give you a clearer example. Say you have some tiny flowers on hand. Why not toss those beauts in a cute little teacup and set them on your kitchen counter? Or what if you and your girlfriends finished a wine bottle the previous night and now it’s just sitting there empty in your garbage? Grab that baby and put some pretty flowers inside! Better yet, you could spray-paint a few wine bottles, insert flowers, then hang them on your living room wall.

The options for household vase alternatives are almost endless: soup cans, tea tins, dessert bowls, mason jars, pitchers, or anything else that will hold water. Have at it!

Brew Up Some Homemade Flower Preservatives

If someone gifts you a fresh Bouq of flowers or you decide to buy one yourself, the last thing you want is to watch them die a premature death. Of course, this means using tried-and-true flower care techniques, but it also means using flower preservatives. Thankfully, most cut flowers come with a handy package of flower food.

But oftentimes, one package isn’t enough—especially if you want your flowers to live their longest possible lifespans while staying at peak attractiveness. That means you’ll have to get your hands a bit dirty and craft a flower preservative concoction right in your kitchen. Don’t worry, though: it’s one of the easiest flower hacks on this list, and you probably already have all the ingredients on hand.

Put simply, that packaged flower food isn’t some complex chemical composition. It’s only three things: sugar, citric acid, and bleach. The easiest homemade preservative recipe is a half-and-half mix of citrus soda (think Sprite or 7-Up) and water, but you can also opt for dropping in two tablespoons of lemon juice, one tablespoon of sugar, and one teaspoon of household bleach for each quart of water in your vase.

Just make sure to change your water and add fresh flower food every other day!

Get Creative with Succulents

Succulents are freaking awesome, and their DIY versatility is unrivaled. If you can dream it up with a succulent, then you can most likely accomplish it—not to mention they are extremely low-maintenance in the care department. If you can’t tell, we’re massive fangirls.

But we believe our enthusiasm for succulents is absolutely justified. Just look at all the things you can do with them! First, they come in nearly every size, shape, and color—which allows for all kinds of interesting and eye-catching uses and combinations. Second, they will hang out almost anywhere with no complaints. Stuff ‘em into a birdcage? Sure! Plaster them on a wall, in clear defiance of gravity? Why not! Pinch them into the ends of some wine corks? You bet!

Needless to say, succulents are the ultimate team player and will always go as far as your DIY skills and imagination can take them.

There you have it! If you’re feeling crafty and creative, we hope our list of flower hacks can help you find some inspiration. Because from experience, we can say that when you combine happy and healthy flowers with DIY genius, what you end up with is something special.

Now let’s go put those flower tips to use!
